# AI CAPTCHA Solvers and Cloudflare Turnstile: How Solving Works

> What an AI CAPTCHA solver really does, why image recognition does not apply to Cloudflare Turnstile, and how automated Turnstile solving works, without hype.

An "AI CAPTCHA solver" usually means software that uses trained models to recognize what a
CAPTCHA shows: objects in an image grid, distorted text, spoken digits in an audio challenge. That
works for image, text and audio CAPTCHAs. It does not describe Cloudflare Turnstile, which shows
no puzzle: Cloudflare says it uses "no images or text to decipher" and runs "a series of small
non-interactive JavaScript challenges" instead. Automated Turnstile solving therefore does not
recognize anything; it runs those browser checks in an environment Cloudflare accepts and returns
the token they produce. This article explains both, in plain terms.

## Where recognition models do the work

Classic CAPTCHAs ask a person to perceive something, so a model that perceives the same thing can
answer:

- **Image grids**, such as reCAPTCHA v2's "select all squares with traffic lights" or hCaptcha's
image challenges, are an image classification or object detection problem.
- **Distorted text** is optical character recognition.
- **Audio challenges** are speech recognition. The Buster browser extension, for example, "helps
you to solve difficult CAPTCHAs by completing reCAPTCHA audio challenges using speech
  recognition".

Services that advertise AI solving are mostly describing this. NopeCHA, for one, says it "applies
deep learning to solve CAPTCHAs for humans" and sells a recognition API for image and text challenges beside
a token API. [Captcha solver extensions vs a solving API](https://zerocaptcha.io/blog/captcha-solver-extension-vs-api)
compares the two ways such tools are delivered.

## Why Cloudflare Turnstile is a different problem

Cloudflare's challenge platform, which powers both Turnstile and the "Just a moment..." challenge
pages, is built around not asking people to perceive anything. Its docs say "Cloudflare does not
use CAPTCHA puzzles or visual tests like selecting objects or typing distorted characters".
Instead, the widget runs checks in the browser: "proof-of-work (computational puzzles),
proof-of-space, probing for web APIs, and various other challenges for detecting browser-quirks and
human behavior". In Managed mode it may add one checkbox, still with no image to recognize.

What decides the result is on Cloudflare's side. Turnstile's privacy addendum lists the signals it
collects: the client IP address, the TLS fingerprint, the User-Agent header, and the sitekey with
its origin. On sites with Bot Management, Cloudflare's machine-learning engine "accounts for the
majority of all detections". So there is machine learning in the loop, but it is Cloudflare's,
and it judges the visitor rather than posing a puzzle.

## How automated Cloudflare Turnstile solving works

A Turnstile solver has to do what a browser does when the widget passes, and do it convincingly:

1. **Load the challenge** for the page's sitekey from `challenges.cloudflare.com`, as the widget
   would on that page.
2. **Run the checks**, proof-of-work included, in an environment whose signals agree with each
other: a user agent, a TLS handshake and HTTP behavior that belong to the same real browser.
Mismatched signals are exactly what detection looks for.
3. **Collect the token** the challenge issues when it passes, and hand it to the customer, who has
300 seconds to submit it once.

The hard part is not intelligence but fidelity and upkeep. Cloudflare updates its challenge
platform continuously, so a solver must keep its browser environments current and verify that
real sites accept its tokens. Speed matters too, because every second of solving comes out of the
token's five minutes.

ZeroCaptcha works this way. Each task is solved by software, with no person clicking anything:
the solver runs the challenge for the page and sitekey you send, and returns the token with the time
it expires. A task is charged only when its token is ready; a
task that fails costs nothing. The [status page](https://zerocaptcha.io/status) shows the live success rate and median
solve time, and the [Cloudflare Turnstile solver](https://zerocaptcha.io/cloudflare-turnstile-solver) page shows the API
in ten languages and tools.

## What "AI" claims to check

When a service calls its Turnstile solving "AI-powered", ask for things you can measure instead:

- **The share of tokens your target site accepts**, measured on your own pages. A token the site
  rejects is worth nothing.
- **The time from task to token**, as a median over a stated window.
- **What you pay for failures.** Check whether a failed or timed-out task is charged; on
  ZeroCaptcha it is not.
- **How the result reaches you**: polling, callbacks, and whether the format matches the client you
  already have.

[How we measure solve times](https://zerocaptcha.io/blog/cloudflare-turnstile-solve-time-benchmark) describes a fair way
to compare services on your own pages.

## AI agents and CAPTCHAs

A different question now comes up often: AI agents that browse the web on someone's behalf meet
CAPTCHAs too. Some operators have stated a policy on it. Anthropic, for example, says of its crawlers
that "we will not attempt to bypass CAPTCHAs for the sites we crawl". If you
build an agent, decide the same question deliberately, and automate only sites that allow it: see
[responsible captcha automation](https://zerocaptcha.io/guides/responsible-captcha-automation).

ZeroCaptcha is not affiliated with NopeCHA or Buster; their names appear only to describe what
they publish.

## Questions

### Can AI solve Cloudflare Turnstile?

Not in the image-recognition sense, because Turnstile shows no images or text to recognize. It runs browser checks such as proof-of-work and probes of web APIs. Automated solvers pass it by running those checks in an environment Cloudflare accepts, then return the token.

### What does an AI CAPTCHA solver actually do?

For image, audio and text CAPTCHAs, it uses trained models to recognize what the challenge shows, such as objects in a grid or spoken digits. That is how tools for reCAPTCHA image and audio challenges work.

### Does ZeroCaptcha use human workers?

No. Every Cloudflare Turnstile task is solved by software, and the task is charged only when its token is ready.
